I finally decided to go with Excel and a spreadsheet after realizing that a spreadsheet could be used in much the same manner as a flat-file database and was much quicker for my purposes. After lots of fiddling I discovered that Access was a whole new world I could do a lot more with it-but to do what I wanted it took forever. (1999) Cool! I had a real database program, or so I thought. It’s not important for our purposes here.) Finally I upgraded that computer and no longer had MS Works, but I did have Microsoft Office. If you don’t know what I mean, don’t worry. (As opposed to a relational database program like Access. It featured a flat-file database program. I then discovered Dbase III on the computers at college and after playing with it a bit I ran back to my dorm room to grab my notebook and digitized my life list.Įventually I moved on to Microsoft Works (about 1996) because that’s what was on my first laptop. Years ago, when I began birding, I kept my lifelist in a paper notebook.
